THE TOWN: Nuremberg is a city on the river Pegnitz and on the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal in the German state of Bavaria about 170 kilometres (110 mi) north of Munich. It is the second-largest city in Bavaria (after Munich).

For Lonely Planet this town is “an energetic place where the nightlife is intense and the beer is as dark as coffee. As one of Bavaria’s biggest draws it is alive with visitors year-round, but especially during the spectacular Christmas market.

For centuries, Nuremberg was the undeclared capital of the Holy Roman Empire and the preferred residence of most German kings, who kept their crown jewels here. Rich and stuffed with architectural wonders, it was also a magnet for famous artists, though the most famous of all, Albrecht Dürer, was actually born here. ‘Nuremberg shines throughout Germany like a sun among the moon and stars,’ gushed Martin Luther. By the 19th century, the city had become a powerhouse in Germany’s industrial revolution.

The Nazis saw a perfect stage for their activities in working class Nuremberg. It was here that the fanatical party rallies were held, the boycott of Jewish businesses began and the infamous Nuremberg Laws outlawing German citizenship for Jewish people were enacted. On 2 January 1945, Allied bombers reduced the city to landfill, killing 6000 people in the process.

After WWII the city was chosen as the site of the war crimes tribunal, now known as the Nuremberg Trials. Later, the painstaking reconstruction – using the original stone – of almost all the city’s main buildings, including the castle and old churches in the Altstadt, returned the city to some of its former glory.

The city lies at the foot of the first mountain range of the Jura Mountains area and it has about 55,000 inhabitants and in 2014 the agglomeration had almost 106,000.

Lonely Planet writes about this town: “Slap bang on the Röstigraben, Switzerland’s French–German divide, double-barrelled Biel-Bienne is the country’s most bilingual town. Locals are prone to switching language mid-conversation; indeed it’s often a tad tricky to know which one to use. For many Swiss, Biel-Bienne is simply a place to change trains, but it’s worth sticking around to explore its nicely preserved historic centre, the adjacent lake and the surrounding vineyards.”

THE TOWN: Acapulco is the original Mexican resort town. Still, it remains a major destination and a worthwhile trip and is the number two Mexican spring break destination among U.S. college students. Lonely Planet writes about it:

Acapulco was Mexico’s original party town, with a stunning topography of soaring cliffs curling into a series of wide bays and intimate coves, fringed with sandy beaches and backed by jungle-green hills. It was dubbed the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’ during its heyday as a playground for the rich and famous, including Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor and Judy Garland. John F Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline honeymooned here, and it was immortalized in films such as Elvis’ Fun in Acapulco and TV’s The Love Boat.

Acapulco remains gorgeous, though overdeveloped. Worse, the city’s reputation has been tarnished by years of violent battles in Mexico’s ongoing drug wars. Despite the frightening homicide statistics, the violence is largely confined to internecine gang struggles for supremacy. International tourism has plummeted, but the city remains comparatively safe to visit. It still offers plenty of atmosphere and charm, with romantic cliffside restaurants, VW Beetle taxis, an impressive 17th-century fort, a world-class botanical garden, cliff divers and the old town’s charming shady zócalo. And when you tire of the crowds, secluded beaches such as Pie de la Cuesta are just a short trip away.

ABOUT HOBART: Hobart is the capital city of the Australian state of Tasmania and is Australia’s second oldest city, after Sydney. Situated along the Derwent River and with humble beginnings as a penal colony, Hobart is now a small and intimate city with a population of around 220,000 in the Greater Hobart area. Lonely Planet writes about it: “No doubt about it, Hobart’s future is looking rosy. Tourism is booming and the old town is brimming with new-found self-confidence. Plan on staying a while – you’ll need at least a few days to savour the full range of beers flowing from the city’s pubs.

Riding high above the city is Mt Wellington, a rugged monolith seemingly made for mountain biking and bushwalking.
