The final part of its toponym, del Vallès, is a reference to the historical county where the town is situated, Vallès. The town’s other buildings include the School of Architecture of the Vallès and the Centre d’Alt Rendiment. Sant Cugat has become an affluent suburb of Barcelona due to its location (only 20 kilometres from the city), its natural surroundings, and its pedestrian shopping area. It also offers restaurants, a co ncert venue, two cinemas, and one large shopping centre. The town has its own train station with a direct metro connection into Barcelona city centre.

THE TOWN:  The port city of Santander is the capital of the autonomous community and historical region of Cantabria situated on the north coast of Spain. Located west of Bilbao, the city has a population of 178,465. It houses the headquarters of multinational bank Banco Santander, and is the location of the founding of the namesake company.

Lonely Planet writes: “The belle-époque elegance of El Sardinero aside, modern Santander is not the most beautiful of cities. A huge fire raged through the centre back in 1941, leaving little that’s old or quaint. But Cantabria’s capital is an engaging one, nonetheless, making the most of its setting along the northern side of the handsome Bahía de Santander. It’s a lively spot to spend a night or two, with fine urban beaches, busy shopping streets, a heaving bar and restaurant scene, plenty of surf, and some intriguing cultural attractions. It’s a popular summer holiday resort for Spaniards.”

Segovia – An happy return in the terrific heart of Castilla y Leon

THE TOURNAMENT: ATP CHALLENGER Open Castilla y Leon

From 07/31 to 08/06

Surface: Hard outdoor

Prize money: $ 100,000

Tournament location: Open de Tennis Villa El Espinar – Carr. de La Garganta, 40400 La Estación de El Espinar, Segovia

General info: Tennis club is located  at El Espinar, about 30 km from Segovia city centre and 70 km from Madrid, and it’s easily accessible by car, bus and train. In the club there is a good but not cheap restaurant, but in the surrounding area  there are numerous dining options, offering local specialties at reasonable prices.

Past champions: 2016 Luca Vanni – 2015/2012 Evgenyi Donskoy – 2014 Adrian Mannarino – 2013 Pablo Carreno Busta – 2011 Karol Beck – 2010 Daniel Gimeno Traver – 2009 Feliciano Lopez – 2008 Sergyi Stakhovsky – 2007 Fernando Verdasco

Entry list: Marcel Granollers (Esp) – Luca Vanni (Ita) – Sergy Stakhovsky (Ukr) – Peter Gojowczyk (Pol) – Adrian Menendez Maceiras (Esp) – Ilya Ivashka (Blr) – Egor Gerasimov (Blr) – Marco Chiudinelli (Sui) – Aldin Setkic (Bih) – Benjamin Bonzi (Fra)

THE TOWN: Segovia  is a city in the autonomous spanish region of Castilla y León. Getting to Segovia means diving in the heart of Spain and Castilla. With its twisting alleyways and high concentration of Romanesque churches, its pedestrian streets and medieval walls, its astonishing monuments and its two rivers, this town deserves more than a simple visit. The old quarter along with its Roman aqueduct has been declared World Heritage Site by Unesco from 1985.

For Lonely Planet: “Unesco World Heritage–listed Segovia has always had a whiff of legend about it, not least in the myths that the city was founded by Hercules or by the son of Noah. It may also have something to do with the fact that nowhere else in Spain has such a stunning monument to Roman grandeur (the soaring aqueduct) surviving in the heart of a vibrant modern city. Or maybe it’s because art really has imitated life Segovia-style – Walt Disney is said to have modelled Sleeping Beauty’s castle in California’s Disneyland on Segovia’s Alcázar. Whatever it is, the effect is stunning: a magical city of warm terracotta and sandstone hues set amid the rolling hills of Castilla, against the backdrop of the Sierra de Guadarrama.”

  • Aqueduct de Segovia

BEST PLACES TO STAY:

  • For tennis lovers I suggest of course the official tournament hotel, which is the Segovia Sierra de Guadarrama located at Los Ángeles de San Rafael. Very beautiful 4 stars hotel offer large rooms of about 20mq2 at starting prices of 102€ for night with breakfast and free wi-fi included. It also offers access to a nearby spa, swimming pools, 2 golf courses, 2 restaurants and a supermarket. Of course the silver lining of the hotel is the possibility to experience the event from inside, closely with tennis players. The downside is the distance from Segovia (20 km) and from Tennis Club too (about 15 minutes by car). So it could be important to rent a car before booking this hotel.
  • In Segovia old town, you coul book Hotel Don Felipe delicious 3 stars hotel, rated 9.2 on Booking, at only 200 mt from Alcazar. Room rates start from 67,5€ with wi-fi included (but you pay breakfast separately for 11€ daily) for a double of 18 mq2. Underground parking service at 12€. The hotel has a very cute garden with view of the surrounding country.
  • Do you want for once to stay in a luxury five-star hotels? Then the right choice is the terrific Eurostars Convento Capuchinos built in a real former monastery and located close to Plaza Mayor. Rooms, available from about 129€ with excellent breakfast included, are large and modernly furnished. The free wi-fi connection is, of course, included. Rated 9.0 on Booking.

THE TOWN: Majorca or Mallorca is the largest island in the Balearic Islands archipelago, which are part of Spain and located in the Mediterranean. Like the other Balearic Islands of Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera, the island is an extremely popular holiday destination, particularly for tourists from Germany and the United Kingdom.

Lonely Planet’s writer Danny Harper tell us the reason why he loves this island: “My parents did the right thing and bought a house in Fornalutx when I was four. Every summer spent in Mallorca was blissful: building camps with friends in the torrent, leaping from high rocks into the waters of the Port de Sóller, listening to the donkeys clop up the steps of Calle del Monte. Nowadays it’s what I took for granted then that transfixes me most: the mesmerising night sky, the Tramuntana glowing like coals at sunset, the timeless terracotta hues of the stone houses and the deep azures of the Mediterranean. And each time I return, there’s something else that enthrals me.”

THE TOWN: Barcelona is the capital and largest city of Catalonia and Spain’s second largest city, with a population of over one and half million people. This city, located directly on the northeastern Mediterranean coast of Spain, has a rich history, having been under Roman, then Frank law before declaring its independence. In 1992, Barcelona gained international recognition by hosting the Olympic games which brought a massive upturn in its tourism industry. This had the effect of changing the city in ways that are still felt today with neighbourhoods renovated (and in some cases leveled) and the intense focus of modern design permeating all aspects of life in Barcelona from public buildings to something as simple as a park bench or an event poster.

Lonely Planet’s writer Regis St.Louis explains reasons he love this exceptional town: “I love the sea, and taking an early-morning jog along the Mediterranean is my favourite way to start the day. I’m also a bit of a history nerd, and relish strolling the cobblestone lanes of the Gothic quarter, thinking about the people in past centuries who walked these streets. Then there’s the food and drink – the first-rate tapas bars, the abundant and inexpensive wine, the superb and reasonably priced multicourse lunches. Add Catalan creativity (Modernisme, Miró, Dalí), bohemian bars and stunning nearby getaways and you have, quite simply, one of the world’s most captivating cities.”

Valencia – Last outdoor matches on clay in the wonderful Spanish town

THE TOURNAMENT: ITF WOMEN BBVA Open Ciudad De Valencia

Date: From 21/11 to 27/11

Money prize: $ 25,000 + H

Surface: Clay Outdoor

Tournament Location: Club de Tenis Valencia – Carrer de Cavanilles 7, Valencia 46010 Spain

General information: Historical Club de Tenis Valencia has a strategic position in the heart of Valencia (1,8 km from Catedral) and just  15 minutes by taxi from Valencia International Airport.

Top 10 Players: Mandy Minella (Lux) – Silvia Soler Espinosa (Esp) – Conny Perrin (Sui) – Sofia Shapatava (Geo) – Lina Gjorcheska (Mkd) – Karolina Muchova (Cze) – Martina Trevisan (Ita) – Tamara Zidanesk (Slo) – Jil Teichmann (Sui) – Jasmine Paolini (Ita)

THE TOWN. Valencia is the capital of the autonomous community of Valencia and the third largest city in Spain after Madrid and Barcelona, with around 800,000 inhabitants in the administrative centre. Its urban area extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of around 1.5–1.6 million people. The Port of Valencia is the 5th busiest container port in Europe and the busiest container port on the Mediterranean Sea. Lonely Planet write about this town: “Spain’s third-largest city is a magnificent place, content for Madrid and Barcelona to grab the headlines while it gets on with being a wonderfully liveable city with thriving cultural, eating and nightlife scenes. Never afraid to innovate, Valencia diverted its flood-prone river to the outskirts of town and converted the former riverbed into a superb green ribbon of park winding right through the city. On it are the strikingly futuristic buildings of the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, designed by local boy Santiago Calatrava. Other brilliant contemporary buildings grace the city, which also has a fistful of fabulous Modernista architecture, great museums and a large, characterful old quarter. Valencia, surrounded by its huerta, a fertile fruit-and-veg farmland, is famous as the home of rice dishes such as paella, but its buzzy dining scene offers plenty more besides.
