THE TOWN:  The port city of Santander is the capital of the autonomous community and historical region of Cantabria situated on the north coast of Spain. Located west of Bilbao, the city has a population of 178,465. It houses the headquarters of multinational bank Banco Santander, and is the location of the founding of the namesake company.

Lonely Planet writes: “The belle-époque elegance of El Sardinero aside, modern Santander is not the most beautiful of cities. A huge fire raged through the centre back in 1941, leaving little that’s old or quaint. But Cantabria’s capital is an engaging one, nonetheless, making the most of its setting along the northern side of the handsome Bahía de Santander. It’s a lively spot to spend a night or two, with fine urban beaches, busy shopping streets, a heaving bar and restaurant scene, plenty of surf, and some intriguing cultural attractions. It’s a popular summer holiday resort for Spaniards.”

THE TOWN: Montreux is a municipality in the district of Riviera-Pays-d’Enhaut in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. It is located on Lake Geneva shoreline at the foot of the Alps and has a population, as of December 2015, of nearly 90,000 in the agglomeration.

This town is universally known for Montreux Jazz Festival.

Lonely Planet writes: “In the 19th century, writers, artists and musicians (Lord Byron and the Shelleys among them) flocked to magical Montreux, what was then a pleasing lakeside resort, and is today a visitor-magnet for the rich, famous and everyone in-between, ever since. Montreux’s main draws include peaceful walks along a lakeshore blessed with 19th-century hotels, a mild microclimate, a hilltop Old Town, one of the world’s premier jazz festivals, Friday-morning lakeside markets and a fabulous 13th-century fortress. Rock-trivia buffs love the story of British hard rockers Deep Purple recording an album at the town’s casino in 1971 and commemorating a fire that broke out during a Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention gig (also held at the casino). The pall of smoke cast over Lake Geneva inspired Deep Purple to pen their heavy-chorded classic, ‘Smoke on the Water’.”

Santo Domingo – Don’t miss the 3rd edition of the most important Caribbean tennis tournament

THE TOURNAMENT: ATP CHALLENGER Milex Open at La Bocha 2017

From 08/14 to 08/19

Prize money: $ 125,000

Surface: Clay outdoor

Tournament location: Tennis Club La Bocha – Calle Euclides Morillo, Santo Domingo, República Dominicana.

How to arrive: La Bocha TC is situated centrally in Santo Domingo, a few steps from Botanical Garden. World Heritage Zona Colonia is far less than 8 km and 20 minutes driving. La Isabela International Airport is at 14 km (25 minutes by taxi).

Casper_Ruud
Next Gen Casper Ruud will be one of the most expected guest at La Bocha

Entry list: Nicolas Almagro (Esp) – Damir Dzumhur (Bih) – Guido Pella (Arg) – Santiago Giraldo (Col) – Victor Estrella Burgos (Dom) – Casper Ruud (Nor) – Nicolas Jarry (Chi) – Gerald Melzer (Aut) – Gastao Elias (Por) – Marco Trungelliti (Arg).

THE TOWN: Santo Domingo, is the capital and largest city in the Dominican Republic and the largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean with a population with its surrounding metropolitan area of almost 3 millions inhabitants. Founded by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496, it s the site of the first university, cathedral, castle, monastery, and fortress in the New World. The city’s Colonial Zone was declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Lonely Planet on this town: “Santo Domingo, or ‘La Capital’ as it’s typically called, is a collage of cultures and neighborhoods. It’s where the sounds of life – domino pieces slapped on tables, backfiring mufflers and horns from chaotic traffic, merengue and bachata blasting from corner stores – are most intense. At the heart of the city is the Zona Colonial, where you’ll find one of the oldest churches and the oldest surviving European fortress, among other New World firsts. Amid the cobblestone streets it would be easy to forget Santo Domingo is in the Caribbean. But this is an intensely urban city, home not only to colonial-era architecture, but also to hot clubs, vibrant cultural institutions and elegant restaurants. Santo Domingo somehow manages to embody the contradictions central to the Dominican experience: a living museum, a metropolis crossed with a seaside resort, and a business, political and media center with a laid-back, affable spirit.”

Lonely Planet‘s writer John Lee on Vancouver: “Eagles whirling overhead, sunset-framed beaches, and the unfurling ocean and mountain diorama from Stanley Park’s breathtaking seawall. Although I moved here in the 1990s, I’ve never stopped gaping at Vancouver’s natural charms. For me, it’s this astonishing backdrop that sets the glass-towered metropolis apart. But I’m a city boy at heart and I’m also delighted that Vancouver is continuing to develop as it grows up. From amazing dining to a thriving art scene, this young West Coast city keeps moving forward – and I don’t just mean the gratifying excellent craft-beer scene (although, personally, that really helps).”

THE TOWN: Montreal is the most populous municipality in the province of Quebec and the second-most populous in Canada. Originally called Ville-Marie, or City of Mary,it is believed to be named after Mount Royal, though there is some debate about this. In 2016, Montreal had a population of 1,704,694. It is the second-largest primarily French-speaking city in the world after Paris.

Lonely Planet‘s writer Regis St.Louis explains us the reasons why he loves this town: “I’m always struck by the unbridled creativity of this city. You see it in the magnificent inventions being stirred up in restaurant kitchens, in the barroom and on stage, and you even see it walking down the street with incredible urban art lurking in unexpected places. The dual French-English mix adds dynamism to the city as does its unique mash-up of European and North American culture. Most captivating of all are the people themselves. Montréalers embody joie de vivre. They eat well, throw great parties and are happy to share their city.”

Segovia – An happy return in the terrific heart of Castilla y Leon

THE TOURNAMENT: ATP CHALLENGER Open Castilla y Leon

Surface: Hard outdoor

Prize money: $ 100,000

THE TOWN: Segovia  is a city in the autonomous spanish region of Castilla y León. Getting to Segovia means diving in the heart of Spain and Castilla. With its twisting alleyways and high concentration of Romanesque churches, its pedestrian streets and medieval walls, its astonishing monuments and its two rivers, this town deserves more than a simple visit. The old quarter along with its Roman aqueduct has been declared World Heritage Site by Unesco from 1985.

For Lonely Planet: “Unesco World Heritage–listed Segovia has always had a whiff of legend about it, not least in the myths that the city was founded by Hercules or by the son of Noah. It may also have something to do with the fact that nowhere else in Spain has such a stunning monument to Roman grandeur (the soaring aqueduct) surviving in the heart of a vibrant modern city. Or maybe it’s because art really has imitated life Segovia-style – Walt Disney is said to have modelled Sleeping Beauty’s castle in California’s Disneyland on Segovia’s Alcázar. Whatever it is, the effect is stunning: a magical city of warm terracotta and sandstone hues set amid the rolling hills of Castilla, against the backdrop of the Sierra de Guadarrama.”

BEST PLACES TO STAY:

  • For tennis lovers I suggest of course the official tournament hotel, which is the Segovia Sierra de Guadarrama located at Los Ángeles de San Rafael. Very beautiful 4 stars hotel offer large rooms of about 20mq2 at starting prices of 102€ for night with breakfast and free wi-fi included. It also offers access to a nearby spa, swimming pools, 2 golf courses, 2 restaurants and a supermarket. Of course the silver lining of the hotel is the possibility to experience the event from inside, closely with tennis players. The downside is the distance from Segovia (20 km) and from Tennis Club too (about 15 minutes by car). So it could be important to rent a car before booking this hotel.
  • In Segovia old town, you coul book Hotel Don Felipe delicious 3 stars hotel, rated 9.2 on Booking, at only 200 mt from Alcazar. Room rates start from 67,5€ with wi-fi included (but you pay breakfast separately for 11€ daily) for a double of 18 mq2. Underground parking service at 12€. THE TOWN: Elected in 2014 The Best European Destination, Porto, which is the second largest city in Portugal, is universally famous for the port wine and for its caves which are object of interest for thousands and thousands of tourists every year. Besides this town enjoys a lovely location along the Douro river estuary and its historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by Unesco thanks to its millenary history.
One of Lonely Planet writers says about Porto: “Porto was love at first sight for me. Even during my first wet autumn encounter, the city shone and locals showed me around with inimitable tripeiro pride. I was hooked. The miradouros peeking above tumbledown rooftops, the history pulsating through alley-woven Ribeira, the random splashes of creativity in street art and azulejos, the musty cellars of big-name port lodges, the design scene, the high-spirited…

THE TOWN: Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States. Named in honor of President George Washington, the City of Washington was founded in 1791 to serve as the new national capital. The metropolitan area, of which the District is the principal city, has a population of over 6 million, the sixth-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country.

Lonely Planet‘s writer Karla Zimmerman explains why she loves this town: “It begins with the Mall. How sweet is it to have a walkable strip of museums where you can see nuclear missiles, cursed diamonds and exquisite Asian ceramics in cool underground galleries – for free? Further down the path the notes and photos people leave at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial will break your heart, and the Lincoln Memorial just kills with its grandness and sweeping view. Shaw wins my affection for its neighborhoody beer halls and cafes. Most of all, I love how Ben’s Chili Bowl makes you feel like a local even if you’re not.”

THE TOWN: Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. Founded during the Romanesque and flourishing by the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque eras, Prague was the capital of the kingdom of Bohemia and the main residence of several Holy Roman Emperors, most notably of Charles IV. It was an important city to the Habsburg Monarchy and its Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is home to a number of famous cultural attractions and from 1992 the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

Lonely Planet’s writer explains the reasons why he loves so much this town: “How can you not love a city that has a pub with vinyl cushions on the wall above the gents’ urinal, so you can rest your head while you ‘go’? Where you can order a beer without speaking, simply by placing a beer mat on the table? And where that beer is probably the best in the world? But it’s not just exquisite ale and a wonderfully relaxed drinking culture that keep bringing me back to Prague. There’s also wit and weirdness in equal measure: a public fountain where two figures pee in a puddle, spelling out literary quotations; a 1950s nuclear bunker hidden beneath a city centre hotel; and a cubist lamppost. Quirky doesn’t even begin to describe it.”
