THE TOWN: Biel/Bienne is a town in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. It is on the language boundary between the French-speaking and German-speaking parts of Switzerland, and is throughout bilingual. Since January 1, 2005, the official name has been “Biel/Bienne”. The city lies at the foot of the first mountain range of the Jura Mountains area and it has about 55,000 inhabitants and in 2014 the agglomeration had almost 106,000.

Lonely Planet writes about this town: “Slap bang on the Röstigraben, Switzerland’s French–German divide, double-barrelled Biel-Bienne is the country’s most bilingual town. Locals are prone to switching language mid-conversation; indeed it’s often a tad tricky to know which one to use. For many Swiss, Biel-Bienne is simply a place to change trains, but it’s worth sticking around to explore its nicely preserved historic centre, the adjacent lake and the surrounding vineyards.”
