THE TOWN: Manama is the capital and largest city of Bahrain, with an approximate population of 157,000 people. Long an important trading center in the Persian Gulf, Manama is home to a very diverse population. After periods of Portuguese and Persian control and invasions from the ruling dynasties of Saudi Arabia and Oman, Bahrain established itself as an independent nation during the 19th century period of British hegemony. It was designated as the capital of Arab culture for the year 2012 by the Arab League.

Lonely Planet introduces Manama in this way: “Try as it might, Manama lacks the polish and in-your-face commercialism of Doha or Dubai, but therein lies its charm. Yes, you’ll find here all the hallmarks of modern Gulf prosperity: vast air-conditioned shopping malls and daringly designed skyscrapers are present in abundance. But the juxtaposition of the city’s pearling past and its oil-rich future is everywhere to be seen: in the National Museum set alongside the avant-garde National Theatre, and in the traditional homes of Muharraq with views across the rooftops to the skyscrapers of downtown Manama. Throw in fabulous eating options and a dynamic art scene and you’ll soon discover that there’s more to Manama than first meets the eye.”
