THE TOWN: Rotterdam is a city in the Dutch province of South-Holland. Its municipality is the second largest in the country (behind Amsterdam), with a population of approximately 601,300 people and over 2.9 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area. The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe and the fourth biggest port in the world. Rotterdam is known as a city of architecture. A few square kilometres of the city centre offers a complete overview of what the twentieth century has produced in terms of modern architecture. Lonely Planet defines this town ‘inspiring and innovative’ and writes about it: “Futuristic architecture, inspired local initiatives such as inner-city canal surfing, a proliferation of art, and a surge of drinking, dining and nightlife venues make Rotterdam one of Europe’s most exhilarating cities right now. The Netherlands’ second-largest metropolis has a diverse, multiethnic community, an absorbing maritime tradition centred on Europe’s busiest port, and a wealth of top-class museums. Rotterdam is a veritable open-air gallery of modern, postmodern and contemporary construction. It’s a remarkable feat for a city largely razed to the ground by WWII bombers. Rebuilding has continued unabated ever since with ingenuity and vision. Split by the vast Nieuwe Maas shipping channel, Rotterdam is crossed by a series of tunnels and bridges, notably the dramatic Erasmusbrug – the swooping white cable-stayed bridge dubbed de Zwaan (the Swan). On the north side of the water, the city centre is easily strolled.

Nearly one third of the population are students from three universities and from three higher education institutions that are outside the university framework in the city. For Lonely Planet Montpellier is a city with style and writes: “Graceful and easy-going, Montpellier is a stylish metropolis with elegant buildings, grand hôtels particuliers (private mansions), stately boulevards and shady backstreets, and gorgeous white-sand beaches on its doorstep. Unlike many southern towns, Montpellier has no Roman heritage. Instead it was founded in the 10th century by the counts of Toulouse and later became a prosperous trading port as well as a scholarly centre – Europe’s first medical school was established here in the 12th century. The population swelled in the 1960s when many French settlers left independent Algeria and relocated here, and it’s now France’s fastest-growing city and one of its most multicultural. THE TOWN: Sofia is the capital and, with about 1.4 million citizens, the biggest city of Bulgaria. Today, Sofia is a dynamic European capital, distinguished by its unique combination of European and Communist-style architecture as well as many beautiful Orthodox churches. Furthermore, it claims to be one of the few European capitals with beautiful scenery.

Lonely Planet writes: “Bulgaria’s pleasingly laid-back capital is often overlooked by visitors heading straight to the coast or the ski resorts, but they’re missing something special. Sofia is no grand metropolis, but it’s a largely modern, youthful city, with a scattering of onion-domed churches, Ottoman mosques and stubborn Red Army monuments that lend an eclectic, exotic feel. Recent excavation work carried out during construction of the city’s metro unveiled a treasure trove of Roman ruins from nearly 2000 years ago, when the city was called ‘Serdica’. Away from the buildings and boulevards, vast parks and manicured gardens offer a welcome respite, and the ski slopes and hiking trails of mighty Mt Vitosha are just a short bus ride from the centre. Home to many of Bulgaria’s finest museums, galleries, restaurants and clubs, Sofia may persuade you to stick around and explore further.”

Top Seeded Players: Xinyun Han (Chn) – Taylor Townsend (Usa) – Fangzhou Liu (Chn) – Elizaveta Kulichkova (Rus) – Asia Muhammad (Usa) – Anastasia Pivovarova (Rus) – Tamara Zidanesk (Slo) – Barbora Stefkova (Cze) – Jamie Loeb (Usa) – Miyu Kato (Jpn)

THE TOWN: Launceston is the second-largest city in Tasmania and is situated in the north of the state on the Tamar River. The city was first settled in 1805 and currently has a population of around 70,000. The city recently has a great success especially for its food and wine scene, and in particular the ambrosial wines of the Tamar Valley got prizes and  international respect.

Lonely Planet writes:“Tasmania’s second city has forever been locked in rivalry with big-smoke Hobart to the south. Launcestonians argue their architecture is more elegant, their parks more beautiful, their surrounding hills more verdant – and even their food scene just downright zestier. And on many of these points it’s hard to argue. Art and design are big here, and there’s a new respect for the city’s fabulous cache of heritage buildings.”

Dallas – A classic challenger event in the mythical Texan “Big D”

Past Winners: 2016 Kyle Edmund – 2015 Tim Smyczek – 2014 Steve Johnson -2013 Rhyne Williams – 2012 Jesse Levine – 2011 Alex Bogomolov jr – 2010 Ryan Sweeting

Usa rising star Taylor Fritz

Main players: Ryan Harrison (Usa) – Taylor Fritz (Usa) – Mikhail Kukushkin (Kaz) – Francis Tiafoe (Usa) – Yuichi Sugita (Jpn) – Bjorn Fratangelo (Usa) – Taro Daniel (Jpn) – Benjamin Becker (Ger) – Rajeev Ram (Usa) – Peter Polansky (Can)

THE TOWN: Dallas, the ninth largest city in the United States is an impressive melting pot of culture and character.  Dallas largely fell victim to its own economic success extending deep into the automobile era, becoming a prime example of urban sprawl, with a downtown strangled by a spaghetti of highways, yet started to reinvent its urban self at the beginning of the 21st century. Boasting high-end luxury hotels, innumerable fine dining spots, and one of the busiest airports in the world, Dallas maintains an upscale ethos also reflected by an affluent population, world-class museums, and a shimmering modern skyline. Its history has been marred by the infamous assassination of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, but there is more historic and contemporary heritage to be discovered in the city. For Lonely Planet: “Dallas is Texas’ most mythical city, with a past and present rich in the stuff that American legends are made of. The ‘Big D’ is famous for its contributions to popular culture – notably the Cowboys and their cheerleaders, and Dallas, the TV series that for a time was a worldwide symbol of the USA. An upscale ethos makes for an amazing dining scene (you can tell which place is hot by the caliber of cars the valet leaves out front) and the nightlife’s not too shabby either.”

Nr.1 of entry list Ivo Karlovic

THE TOWN: Quito is the capital city of Ecuador, and at an elevation of 2,800 meters above sea level, it is the highest official capital city in the world. With a population of 2,671,191 Quito is the second most populous city in Ecuador, after Guayaquil. The historic center of Quito has one of the largest, least-altered and best-preserved historic centers in the Americas, and is undoubtedly one of the cities main tourist attractions. Quito, along with Kraków, were the first World Cultural Heritage Sites declared by UNESCO in 1978. Lonely Planet writes about this town:“A capital city high in the Andes, Quito is dramatically situated, hemmed in by mountain peaks whose greenery is concealed by gray afternoon mist. Modern apartment buildings and modest concrete homes creep partway up their slopes and busy commercial thoroughfares lined with shops and choked with traffic turn into subdued neighborhoods on Sundays. Warm and relaxed, traditional Ecuadorian Sierra culture – overflowing market stands, shamanistic healers, fourth-generation hatmakers – mix with a vibrant and sophisticated culinary and nightlife scene. The city’s crown jewel is its ‘Old Town,’ a Unesco World Heritage Site packed with colonial monuments and architectural treasures. No sterile museum mile, everyday life pulses along its handsomely restored blocks with 17th-century facades, picturesque plazas and magnificent art-filled churches. Travelers, and many locals too, head to the ‘gringolandia’ of the Mariscal, a compact area of guesthouses, travel agencies, ethnic eateries and teeming bars.”

Me, tennis and travels – An interview to Dalma Gálfi

Dear followers this week we have the possibility to make you know a young talented girl of ’98 generation and former Nr.1 of junior tennis rankings. We are talking about hungarian player Dalma Gálfi who has universally considered one of the possible rising stars of our favourite sport.

Dalma was born in Veszprem (Hungary) on 08/13/1998 and began to play tennis at 5. In 2014, when she was still a junior, she obtained her first good results in Itf Pro circuit by winning two 10k tournaments in Heraklion; in 2015 she already debuted in Fed Cup and won other three Itf tournaments including a 25k in Cairns, Australia. She closed the year at 313rd position of Wta ranking. In the same year she ended her brilliant junior career which culminated with Us Open victory. Infact from 2016, at just 17 years old, she dedicated completely at pro tournaments and we didn’t have to wait very long to see her perfomance improve more and more; two triumphs in 25k tournaments and a final in the prestigious Tokyo 100k at the end of the year. Her new best ranking will be fixed probabily on next Monday when she should reach the 150 position of the ranking.

But now the interview…

Hi Dalma, how many years are you wandering the world to play tennis tournaments despite your very young age?

I started playing tournaments abroad when I was 11 years old. My first tournaments were mostly in close countries to Hungary.

Usually are you able to enjoy and visit the attractions of places where you play tournaments ?

It always depends on how i do on each tournament. If i lose quite early, i go and look around in the city where i am. If i play well, and do well at the tournaments, then i don’t have time for anything unfortunately.

What is the most beautiful place did you discover playing tennis until now?

My favourite country is definitely Australia. I love the atmosphere of the cities, especially Brisbane and Melbourne. There are lots of great coffeshops where you can have a nice coffee or a brunch with your friends. The beaches of the Gold Coast are just spectacular. And my best experience was to hold a koala in my hands.

Is there some city or place that you would suggest us absolutely to visit of your country?

Without any doubt I would suggest to spend some days in Budapest.

To travel is very expensive for a tennis player too. Do you use any particular trick to save money in booking flights and hotels?

I can’t really use any tricks because your schedule can change anytime, so you can’t really book a ticket in advance.

What are your next tournaments planned and your professional goals for 2017?

I am going to stay in Hungary for the WTA tournament in Budapest which i hope it will be very nice, so i would suggest everybody to come and look around in the beautiful, and to enjoy some good tennis.

I think it will be a great tournament in a wonderful town. Thanks for your kindness Dalma.

Thanks to you Gianluca.

The 1st edition of Hungarian Ladies Open will be held from 02/20 to 02/26 in Budapest. Why to not visit this wonderful town and contemporary to not see our Dalma to face some of the best players of the world like Simona Halep and Johanna Konta? We will dedicate in the next week an article to this tournament but in the meantime if you want to know something more about the magnificent Budapest….
