Here again with a new episode of our section that talks about tennis players and trips. Today we had the chance to interview a player that for so many years is traveling the world to play tennis matches. His name is Jan Mertl, he was born on 01/03/1982 at Usti Nad Labem in Czech Republic and in his long career he won something like 23 itf future tournaments, last of which on the past week. With a best ranking fixed at 163rd position, Jan didn’t lose his desire to compete and is now ready to face a further tennis season playing many difficult matches and….visiting a lot of nice places.
But now the interview…
I started to travel when I was around 19 or 20 so its been already a long time:) Its 15 years:)
Usually are you able to enjoy and visit the attractions of places where you play tournaments ?
Usually as soon as I loose I travel back home or another tournament but in some special places I did it because I knew it could be the last chance to see it. But usually every year we play same tournaments so we already know the place.
What is the most beautiful place did you discover playing tennis?
I really like Australia. There are so many beutifull places but I would say the best are Guadaloupe,Bermuda and Mauricius where I played the tournaments.
Is there some city or place that you would suggest us absolutely to visit of your country?
Of course I would suggest to visit Prague. Its really amazing city with long historical past. But we have also some other cities or places like Cesky Krumlov and Valtice. Those two I would reccomend after Prague.
To travel is very expensive for a tennis player too. Do you use any particular trick to save money in booking flights and hotels?
I try to book the flights and hotels throught the finder or the travel agency but sometimes we have to do it last moment as we move to other tournaments so the prices are higher.
What are your next tournaments planned and your professional goals for future?
I will play just couple of czech tournaments in the end of the year. Next year I would like to get in qualification at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
Thank you Jan.
Among places that Jan suggested to visit in his country, I want to focus my attention on Valtice. This is a small town in Břeclav District, South Moravian Region in the Czech Republic, close to the Austrian border. Valtice contains one of the most impressive Baroque residences of Central Europe. It was designed as the seat of the ruling princes of Liechtenstein. Together with the neighbouring manor of Lednice, to which it is connected by a 7 kilometres long lime-tree avenue, Valtice forms the Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
