Last Second Tip – A Tennis Excursion In Prague

It’s possible that you are already there because this is one of the most charming town of Europe; it is possible that you are already there to enjoy a romantic walk on Karl Bridge; it’s possible that you are already there to taste an exquisite trdlo in the cobbled streets of Stare Mesto. If all this is possible it means that you are in the fantastic Prague to spend your next weekend. Of course the Golden Town no need of my presentation or my good words since it is one of the most beautiful and visited cities in the world, but there is an event currently taking place in Prague which can represent an additional element of interest for lovers of travel…and tennis. This is the Advantage Cars Prague Open 2016, a main tournament of ITF women calendar with 75,000 USD prize money, hosted by Tennis Club CLTK PRAHA. Tomorrow will take place these semi-finals with this order of play:

ALLIANZ COURT from 11:00 am REBECCA SRAMKOVA – CARINA WHITTOEFT

COURT 2 from 11:00 am REBECCA PETERSON – ANTONIA LOTTNER

Among these names my attention will be focused especially on Slovak 19 year’s old Rebecca Srmakova

rebecca-sramkova-1

Infact this year, this very talented young player has already won  two $ 25,000 events (in Karshi on hard and in Rome on clay), showing a complete tennis, very powerful shots and a remarkable capacity to adapt to different surfaces. Thanks to these and other good results (for example a semifinal in Trnava $ 100,000  tournament) she has been able to climb WTA ranking moving from 312th position of last 2015 to actual 175th position.

German contender 21 year’s old german Karina Witthoeft is a bit older than Rebecca but she is an intersting player too.

witthoeft

Her best year has been 2015 in which she was able to win 3 ITF tournament (especially the Cagnes-Sur-Mer one with 100,000 USD money prize) and reach the 65th position in Wta ranking. Now, after a crisis period that has sent down over the 90th position of  WTA ranking, she will try to recover some useful positions just starting from Prague.

The Prague Open is taking place on clay courts of CLTK Praha in Stvanice Island . This is far about 4 km from Nove Mesto. The best accomodation solution for tennis lovers, at just 300 mt from courts, is undoubtely the fantastic 5***** HILTON PRAGUE HOTEL which offers large, bright and airy deluxe rooms of 28 mq at a price of 117€ without breakfast (140€ with breakfast included). The free wi-fi connection is included. Remarkable is the award-winning Cloud 9 Sky Bar from where you can enjoy amazing panoramic views.

Of course Prague has thousands of other possibile accomodations. Choose here you favourite one!

And so….are you ready for this new tennis excursion?

Los Cabos – Tennis Stars At The End of the World

At the tip of Baja California Sur, in Mexico, you will find the dual destination of Los Cabos. Tranquil San Jose del Cabo retains the look and vibe of an authentic Mexican town with cobblestone streets, little restaurants and boutiques radiate from the central main square. Trendy and fashionable Cabo San Lucas, on the other end of the highway, is party central with funky bars and the slick Luxury Avenue Mall centered around the marina. This is the amazing location of the 1st edition of ATP Tournament ALBIERTO LOS CABOS OPEN which has replaced, from this year, Bogota event in Atp calendar.

Los Cabos Open will be held from 8 to 15 August on hard courts of Cabo del Mar Ocean and Ecopark Village, an outstanding location with top-notch sports facilities in the heart of Cabo San Lucas, and will have a money prize of 721,030 Usd. Many will be the players who will try to triumph in the most important tennis event of Central America, among these the austrian Dominic Thiem (N.1 of the entry list and N.7 in ATP rankings), australian talented Bernard Tomic, spanish expertized Feliciano Lopez, french Lucas Pouille and croatian bomber Ivo Karlovic. Among other names, is to watch with attention american teenager Taylor Fritz for his age and ukrain Alexandr Dolgopolov for his fool talent which always guarantees fun and show.

Los Cabos International Airport is the main way to get in this area. It accommodates 518 weekly operations , serving 40 destinations , connecting different states of the United States, Mexico , Canada and Latin America and is able to serve 3 millions passengers yearly.

Not to be missed in Los Cabos:

  1. EL ARCO DE CABO SAN LUCAS
  2. SANTA MARIA BEACH
  3. SAN JOSÈ DEL CABO VILLAGE

Between municipalities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo there is a large number of luxury resorts, so called The Corridor which is able to host 1,7 millions people for year. My selection include three hotels with different range of prices:

  • HYATT PLACE LOS CABOS. Without doubts the best valued for money solution in Los Cabos. Just 300 mt from beach this hotel have an outdoor pool and fitness center. Price for a 35 mq King Double Room starts from 73€ and includes breakfast, free wi-fi and parking. In San Jose del Cabo.
  • THE BUNGALOWS HOTEL. If you need more space and especially of a little kitchen this could be the right solution. Located in San Lucas and far just 3 minutes from Los Cabos Port it offers Cozy Suites of 40 mq with free gourmet breakfast buffet and Wi-Fi connection at 121€ per day. Free parking area just outside the hotel.
  • THE CAPE – A THOMPSON HOTEL. This deluxe resort has a restaurant, an outdoor pool and free wi-fi connection. An extralarge (55 mq) King Deluxe Room costs 351€ per day with breakfast (257€ without). Each room is superbly and modernly furnished and gets an amazing ocean view balcony. In Cabo San Lucas.

Please notice that to these prices you have to add about 20% more for various taxes.

Trnava – Having Fun with Tennis in the Little Rome

There is a little town in Slovakia, just 47 km far from Bratislava, that for the high numbers of churches within the city walls has been nicknamed The Little Rome or more recently The Slovak Rome. Just for this Trnava would be worth a daily trip from Bratislava, if in more we add that in the second week of August will be held the eleventh edition of the prestigious Strabag Challenger Open, we’ll have a good reason to stay at least one night in this cute city.

The Strabag Open is the biggest clay tournament in Slovakia with total prize money of 42,500 USD plus hospitality. It will be played on clay courts of Tc Empire Club as usual. The admittance at the tournament is completely free as always wanted by tournament director, former slovakian tennis champion, Dominik Hrbaty. The club, located in Hajdóczyho 11,  has 16 clay courts, one modern 4 stars hotel, lounge bar and restaurant, a playground for children and many other facilities.

After 2015 Robin Haase victory, this year so many strong players will battle to try to win the coveted trophy, in particular slovakian Andrej Martin (able to reach the final least week in Umag Atp), spanish Inigo Cervantes and Daniel Gimeno Traver, rumenian Radu Albot, japanese Taro Daniel and czech Adam Pavlasek. Dominik Hrbaty will hope until the end of being able to assign a wild card to the best current Slovak tennis player Martin Klizan.

Of course to get in Trnava is possible by car or by train or public buses from Bratislava. In alternative you could come from Wien which is far just 131 km. On skyscanner you can try to find the better flight solution for you.

As regards as accomodations, I remember that Trnava is a very little city and there aren’t so much hotels and pensions available especially during the tournament, but however i can suggest:

  1. Of course official tournament Hotel Empire but the problem is that during the challenger is always completely full because reserved to players. But you can just try to see if there is some room available last minute here.
  2. Best value for money is undoubtely 3 stars hotel La Pension which offers beautiful accomodations to customers. There arte two kinds of apartments: Standard are large 33 mq2 and prices start from 49€, Superior are 80 mq2 and start from 69€. Both offer modern furnishment, kitchen and free wi-fi. Superior gets wide living area more.
  3. IMPIQ Hotel. Modern hotel, located in a calm zone of Trnava but not so far from old city, offers a new building, modern designed rooms, a very good restaurant, free parking area and wi-fi connection. The prices for a Business Room of 15 mq2 start from 99€. The full buffet breakfast is included.

Portoroz – The Slovenian Escape between Tennis, Sea and Gaming

Portorož (literally “Port of Roses”) is a coastal settlement in the Municipality of Piran in southwestern Slovenia. It’s now one of the most important tourist area of Slovenia, known especially for health resorts, beaches and casinos. The municapality of Piran (just 2 km from Portoroz) is a very beautiful medieval town with narrow street and compact houses. Both of them are fantastic places where you can think to stay for a relaxing trip with a fantastic mixing of culture, sea, fun, and good food. And if you will find in your busy schedule a few hours of time for tennis there is Tilia Open to wait for you.

Infact since 2013 it’s held, on hard courts of Sports Recreational Center Marina Portoroz, the Tilia Slovenian Open, a challenger event which will return also this summer from 8th to 15th August with a money prize of 50,000 USD. The best slovenian players will try to win the tournament; especially Gregor Zemlja winner in 2013 edition, Blaz Kavcic (winner in 2014) and other home hero Blaz Rola.  Among other players, italian Luca Vanni (winner of the last edition), naturalized briton Aljaz Bedene but exspecially top 100 german Florian Mlayer will have great chance of victory. In short, for this year too, viewers will have the opportunity to attend tennis matches of the highest quality.

Piran-Portoroz has easily accessible in many ways. There is a little airport but the links with Europe are not very frequent and are also expensive. The best solution is to get to the airport of Trieste “Ronchi dei Legionari” which is only 20 km from Portoroz. Infact at the airport is possible to get a publc bus with leave daily at 14:30. If you want to get a tour of this beatiful zone of Slovenia, a quite cheap and comfortable solution is of course to rent a car. Go on skyscanner to find your better flight solution to Trieste or Portoroz.

Marian Portorož is the first marina built in Slovenia. Planning began as far back as 1974 and the marina was constructed on areas that were once the salt pans of Lucija. It is also a sports and recreation centre (which hosts tournament), where guests have the possibility to play tennis on 13 clay courts, 2 covered courts under a balloon and 4 hard surface courts. Mini golf may be played on 19 tracks as well as table tennis, basketball, volleyball and five-a-side football (futsal). Swimming in a pool may also be enjoyed. In the area there are also two restaurants which offers some exquisite menus that combine traditional and modern flavours. In the protected compound of Marina Portorož lies a luxurious apartment residence area called Residence Marina that offers prestigious apartments form 70 to 140 m2 with royal comfort, extensive terraces, Jacuzzi baths and a memorable view of the Gulf of Piran. The classic apartment price for three people starts from 170€ (breakfast paid 11€ more). Of course if you want to follow tennis tournament this is the best accomodation possible.

marina portoroz

Other two good solutions are:

  • Hotel Celigo. Just 800 mt from Adriatic Sea and 300 from Portoroz Marina this elegant hotel offers elegant interiors and modern-style accommodation with free Wi-Fi and a plasma TV. A stylish à la carte restaurant serving Slovenian and international cuisine is available. A standard double room (wide 25 mq2 with extra-large sized bed) in the period of tennis event costs just 175€ daily with breakfast included.

hotel celigo

  • If you can not give up the luxury on vacation, then the right hotel for you is undoubtedly the Hotel Kempinski Palace. Until 2008 known as Palace Hotel, this is the only deluxe hotel in Slovenia. The hotel was built since 1908 and completed in 1912 at the time of Austro-Hungarian Empire. At the end of 1983, it was proclaimed a cultural monument, and a park in front of hotel was called a monument of designed nature. Today this hotel is run by German luxury hotel chain Kempinski. Today it features  seawater swimming pools, a vast state-of-the-art spa and wellness area, various restaurants and bars as well as views of the Adriatic Sea. Free WiFi access is available in all areas. Guests can relax and unwind in the Rose Spa that spreads over 1,500 m²  and can taste sensational menus in 2 a-la-carte restaurants. Prices stars from 290€ per night for a terrific superior room of 35 mq2 with breakfast included.

Last Second Trip – From Bruges to Knokke-Heist To See Two Young Guns

Are you spending a long weekend break in fantastic Bruxelles? Have you planned to visit amazing Bruges too? Do you know that not so far from Bruges (about 20 km) there are two of the most intersting young players of pro circuit engaged in the semifinals of The Rising Stars Tennis Tour 2016 Knokke? The complete name of this city is Knokke-Heist and it’s a touristic locality of West Flanders famous for its beaches and for its ten casinos which are the largest in the whole Belgium, and are located on seaside promenade. Of course I think that for tourists will be better to stay one night in Bruges than in Knokke, because Bruges is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful town of Europe (look at movie “In Bruges” to have a confirmation) . The historic city centre is a prominent World Heritage Site of UNESCO and thanks to its beautiful canals, Bruges has been often referred as The Venice of the North.

But who are the two young guns that you could see in this ITF tournament (10,000 USD prize money) which is taking place on clay courts of  Knokke Zoute Tennis Club? Their names are Casper Ruud and Daniel Altmaier both born in dicember 1998. The first  (son of former tennis player Christian Ruud) with his 557 Best Ranking has already won his first ITF title in Spain this year and is considered the biggest hope of Norwegian tennis and one of the possible future protagonists of European tennis; Altmaier is instead a talented crystaline from Germany that could be for that country the new Boris Becker. Altmair won his 1st ITF tournament just in Belgium less than one month ago and he would like to repeat in Knokke this great result. But will Casper Ruud agree with him?

CASPER RUUD

DANIEL ALTMAIER

In this moment in Knokke there aren’t accomodations with great value for money so you could stay for one night in Bruges, that it’s not a cheap destination, but offers a wide range of accomodations. My favourite is the CROWNE PLAZA BRUGGE, probabily the best located hotel in Bruges which offers enormous room at 200€ per night between Saturday and Sunday. Wi-fi is free, breakfast for two costs 29€ more, and with 23€ additional fee per day customers can use undergound parking (but you can use for about 10€ the one under central station). Look here for other solutions in Bruges.

To save money another idea could be stay in beautiful Gand, in Graslei e Korenlei zone, o which is far about 50 km from Bruges and 70km from Knokke. Here is a list of possible accomodations in Gand.

About tournament:

Tennis club: Knokke Zoute Tennis Club

Not before 16:00 Casper Ruud (Nor) – Joran Vliegen (Bel)
